Seth LaRue was named an assistant coach for Campbell Baseball in August 2024.
“Seth comes from a long line of great baseball minds and was an integral piece of the record setting offense at Purdue last season,” Head Coach Chris Marx said. “He is one of the premier catching coaches in the country and will be a tremendous asset to all facets of our offense. As an alumnus, he is extremely passionate about Campbell Baseball, and I’m excited to welcome him and his wife Gabby back to Buies Creek.”
LaRue makes his return to Campbell, where he was a player during the 2014 and 2015 seasons and a graduate assistant in 2016. LaRue both played under (2015) and worked alongside (2016) Marx at Campbell.
“I’m fired up to get back to work in the Creek,” LaRue said. “This has been home for me since I first stepped on campus as a player. Most coaches dream about getting back to their alma mater, and I would like to thank Coach Marx for giving me that opportunity.”
LaRue follows Marx from Purdue, where he spent the 2024 season as an assistant coach for the Boilermakers. While at Purdue, LaRue focused on coaching the catchers and baserunning. He also assisted with hitting and recruiting, as the Boilermakers set a new program record with a .406 on-base percentage.
LaRue coached Purdue catcher Connor Caskenette, who was named a 2024 Buster Posey Award semifinalist before being drafted in the 12th round of the 2024 MLB Draft by the Miami Marlins. He also worked closely with Luke Gaffney, who was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year after setting Purdue freshman records in home runs, hits and runs scored.
Prior to his time in West Lafayette, LaRue was the lead assistant at Southern Indiana. An Evansville, Ind. native, he coached the hitters and base runners while working with the outfielders and catchers defensively. In their first season at the Division I level, the Screaming Eagles led the Ohio Valley Conference in on-base percentage.
Before that, LaRue spent three seasons at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. With LaRue spearheading the daily hitting development, A&M-Corpus Christi set team records for runs (401), RBI and triples in 2022. Tre Jones led the Southland Conference in slugging percentage while connecting for 12 home runs and 18 doubles. Brendan Ryan was 26 of 27 on stolen bases attempts to set a team record. Both players were first-team all-conference honorees. LaRue also helped recruit lefthanded pitcher Zach Garcia, who was the Southland Freshman of the Year and a Freshman All-American in 2022.
LaRue spent three years as an assistant coach at Southern Illinois from 2017-19. He had a lead role in the instruction of hitting and base running while coordinating the in-game offensive strategy. The Salukis stole 375 bases across those three seasons, ranking fourth nationally during that span.
An 80% percent stolen base conversion rate in both 2018 and 2019 helped SIU rank among the top five nationally and lead the MVC in stolen bases both years. Southern also led the league in triples in each of LaRue’s final two seasons in Carbondale.
Southern Illinois had seven players selected in the MLB Draft from 2017-19 and LaRue helped recruit three other draftees to campus.
LaRue served as the third base coach at SIU, TAMUCC and USI, and he was the first base coach for Purdue.
LaRue played for the two previous head coaches in Buies Creek, Justin Haire and Greg Goff, seeing time as a catcher, infielder and outfielder. He played in 97 games across two seasons, including starting in 53 of 56 games as a senior.
LaRue was a member of the 2014 squad that won the Big South Conference Tournament and advanced to an NCAA Regional, the first for Campbell since 1990. After finishing his playing career, LaRue spent the 2016 season as a graduate assistant for the Camels.
He was a two-year starter and two-year academic all-conference honoree at Olney Central College from 2012-13. He played summer ball in both the Coastal Plain and Ohio Valley Leagues, representing the Wilson Tobs at the 2014 CPL All-Star Game.
“The championship standard and culture has been set at Campbell,” LaRue said. “There have been so many great players and coaches walk through these doors who built a powerhouse based on doing things the right way. Under Coach Marx’s leadership, I am confident we will continue the tradition while taking this program to new heights. Roll Humps!”
LaRue earned both his bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science and master’s in business administration from Campbell. He is joined in Buies Creek by his wife, Gabriella.
